YOUNG Ryland's day at the beach ended with a nasty shock when he was left writhing in pain after a bluebottle sting.

The six-year-old was swimming with his family in Torquay on Wednesday afternoon when a stinger brushed past his leg.

Ryland's aunty, Ariel Carhill was in the water with him at the time.

"He flew out of the water so we all just raced over to find out what was wrong with him," Ms Carhill said.

"He was crying, shaking, itching; we tried putting him under the shower just up from the beach and that didn't help so I raced him straight up the house; he was in tears."

Ryland's grandmother, Racheal Woolley, said she knew exactly what to do to help her suffering grandchild.

"When my youngest daughter brought him back here, I grabbed the white vinegar and poured it all over him," Ms Woolley said.

"Being from Townsville I know what it's like."

Ms Woolley said her home town had nets in the ocean to stop stingers, but there were none in Hervey Bay. …
