FORMER NRL bad boy Anthony Watts' legal team plan to prove he was mentally ill at the time he is alleged to have assaulted a man at South Murwillumbah.

The former North Queensland, Sharks and Sydney Roosters player found himself in strife following the late-November incident in which it has been alleged he assaulted a Murwillumbah man before he fled the scene and led police on a chase.

His lawyer, Campbell MacCallum, of Moloney MacCallum Lawyers, this week told reporters Watts may have been mentally ill at the time of the incident.

"There is a basis to argue he may have been suffering from a mental infirmity as he has a history of self-harm and has made attempts on his life," Mr MacCallum said.

The matter came before the Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday but was adjourned until next month to allow lawyers to document his psychiatric history.

Watts previously appeared via audio-video link in November but was refused bail and has spent since then behind bars. …
