RAIN, hail or shine cricket will be played at the Bagawa Cricket Ground this Australia Day.

Let's face it, it would be un-Australian if there was no cricket on the historic ground which celebrates its 90th birthday this year.

Groundsman Adam Rees said preparation work on the ground was well and truly under way.

"This year, we're doing the cricket thing again," he said.

"Irrespective of the weather, we will have marquees and tarpaulin.

"It's still usable, (the pitch) is very usable."

With a new timber sign made by local artist Ian Watson crowning the old pitch, laid in 1927, Rees hopes to open it back up to families for the community match. Games were moved to Nana Glen in the 1950s.

Last year Nana Glen representative Gerry O'Connor said the old Bagawa Cricket Ground "was a real community venue" where men used to play their wives.

Rees, the landowner who discovered the pitch under foliage, wanted to continue its legacy with an annual Australia Day event. …
