Sexist Day of the Year Should Change

"MUM, why are women so sexist?" my teenage son asked me.

"What do you mean? Such a suggestion could only come from a man," I retorted.

"Well, you expect us to open the doors for you, you expect to get everything first and you expect all this just because you are a woman. Surely that's sexism?"

I was reminded of his glib comments on the most sexist day of the year this week.

That is International Women's Day.

As a woman, I find the celebration of day just for my sex embarrassing and distasteful.

And, I maintain, the reason why women earn less than men or there aren't as many women CEOs as men has little do with sexism.

It has to do with the most empowering issue of all.

Many women have more to their life than just boring old work.

Has anyone bothered to do a study to compare a women's work/life balance to a man's?

Most of the women I know juggle work, children, the home, gym and leisure while their partners focus on their career goals and bank balance. …
