THE two biggest owls in Australia, which both live in the Mackay region, are destined to be reflected by an even grander art installation to raise awareness about their threats of extinction.

The giant artwork installation, which measures 2.4m high and 2.4m wide, will be created by Sunshine Coast artist Kris Martin and Mackay artist Donna Maree Robinson, with the help of a $9760 Green Arts grant from the State Government and Mackay Regional Council.

The purpose of creating a giant bambo owl is to raise awareness of the two species that are threatened within the Mackay region as a result of climate and habitat changes.

The Mackay region is the only place the largest owl, the Powerful Owl, and the second largest, the Rufous Owl, live together.

"The Powerful Owl (the largest owl in Australia) is listed as vulnerable to extinction in Queensland and Mackay's rainforest hinterland is the northern extent of its range which extends south through the coast and highlands of NSW to western Victoria. …
