Noosa Sailor Is Sitting on Top of the Match Race World

NOOSA'S Ben Vercoe is sitting on top of the world this week after his Team KA Match won the Coconut Grove Cup in Miami and qualified for the Match Cup America world tour.

It was Vercoe's first time both racing with skipper Evan Walker and on the very fast M32 catamarans which are now used on the international circuit.

"The M32s are incredible boats, not like anything I've raced before," Vercoe said.

Their win was close: so very, very close.

It was decided at the rounding of the final mark in the final race of the regatta.

"We trailed off the start and over the race we slowly worked our way back with a few close crosses on the upwind beats, but were never really leading until the last top mark which leads into the reach to the finish," Vercoe said.

He returns to his Etchells racing ahead of the next world tour match racing event later in the year.

Closer to home, eight sailors from the Mooloolaba Yacht Club's youth sailing squad head to Brisbane this weekend to race on the Elliott 6s in the second annual Australian Schools Match Racing Championship. …
