TRIATHLON: Emerald's Jennifer and Lance Bennett embark on the 10-hour drive with their six children each year to take part in the Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival.

Keen athletes, the family of eight all contest the triathlon events, with four of the six children crossing the line first in the Junior Tri and Lance placing third in the Senior South 32 Julia Creek Triathlon.

Known as the toughest sprint triathlon course in the country, the race is a must-do on the triathlon calendar, known for its gruelling conditions in the heart and heat of the Queensland outback.

Now in its 23rd year, the triathlon draws competitors from across Australia, with an 800m swim in the Eastern Creek, a 25km bike ride and 5km run. Lance said it was particularly tough this year with stronger than usual head winds.

"The bike ride was insanely tough, it didn't leave me with much for the run. I've raced against Ben Cooper (who placed second) before and came second to him a few times so I knew I would have to have a good run because he is so strong," Lance said. …
