Honour for Bears' Best; Giles Has Her Number Retired

BASKETBALL: The number seven holds special meaning to Bundaberg Bear Kylie Giles.

Not only is it her favourite number, inspired by her father wearing it in rugby league, it was also the number she wore predominantly during her illustrious 19 year career with Bundaberg.

And now it is hers forever.

On Saturday, the association officially retired her number with no one able to wear seven again when the Bears play a competitive match.

It is the first time the association has done that.

And after 17 seasons as captain and over 200 games it is easy to see why.

"I'm really honoured," she said.

"It's nice they've respected what I did with this gesture."

Giles also admits it was a surprise it happened.

Playing for the Bears in the Autobarn Reunion Games, this was the last thing she expected.

"Lucinda Doughty organised a speech, because of my retirement, but I didn't know it was going to be that," she said. …
