Jaguars Notebook; Smith Is Focused on Season, Not Contract

Jaguars outside linebacker Telvin Smith is eligible for a contract extension but tried Tuesday to put a halt to that issue dominating his offseason.

"On the contract questions, I'm going to say this to address the whole issue: I like to focus on football so when management decides what they want to do, they'll approach me and we'll go from there," Smith said at EverBank Field. "As a football player, I'm just here to help this team keep growing."

Smith said he "showed up now to show it's not about me and the personal goals, but about this team and trying to build something."

In the final year of his rookie contract, Smith is scheduled to have a cap number this year of $1,849,763, which is 23rd-highest on the team.

Smith has 345 tackles in three years for the Jaguars. One comparable for Smith if/when talks begin is Miami's Kiko Alonso, who signed a four-year, $28.91 million extension last month.

The Jaguars could be proactive after the draft to extend Smith or receiver Allen Robinson or center Brandon Linder so they could put some of the new money on this year's cap. Per the NFLPA, the Jaguars have $49,925,024 in salary cap space. Last year, they extended receiver Allen Hurns on June 3, moving his 2016 cap number from about $600,000 to $9 million.

The Jaguars got their first look at the reorganized locker room upon returning to the facility Monday.

Gone is the Ping-Pong table that was a constant presence in the middle of the locker room.

Defensive end Malik Jackson said his locker is between cornerback Jalen Ramsey and right tackle Jermey Parnell. Outside linebacker Paul Posluszny said he is flanked by defensive end Dante Fowler and currently an empty locker (reserved for a draft pick?). And Smith said he is between kicker Jason Myers and an empty locker. …
