Bypass Quick to Prove Worth Just Weeks after It Opened

IT was almost two years in the making, but already the PS30m Morpeth Northern bypass is making a real difference to drivers' journeys.

The 3.8km bypass runs from Whorral Bank roundabout to the A1 trunk road between Fairmoor and Lancaster Park in Northumberland. It opened on April 4. Carillion PLC - which built it - said the road would reduce congestion in Morpeth and cut travel times between the A1 and south east Northumberland.

Ian Simpson, 42, who lives near Hebron, said traffic now moves more freely into the village.

He said: "The road was really bad and we would quite regularly get three or four heavy lorries coming past our door. It was quite unpleasant.

"We were worried about the noise from the traffic using the bypass but we've barely heard it at all. I've used it quite a lot and it is nice to be able to access the oldgate side of Morpeth easily."

Morpeth North councillor David Bawn said the bypass has made a big difference to drivers' daily commutes. …
