Norwood's Homer in the 11th Lifts Jumbo Shrimp

Designated hitter John Norwood led off the 11th inning with his second homer in as many days to power the Jumbo Shrimp to a 3-2 victory over the Mobile BayBears on Sunday.

The game was watched by 6,620 fans at the Baseball Grounds, boosting the Jumbo Shrimp's home attendance to 67,808 for their first nine home games of the season.

It was the third win in a row for Jacksonville, which is 6-3 at home and 10-14 overall.

Norwood, who was hitless in four games in a row and was in an 0 for 16 slump before getting a single Friday night and a homer Saturday night, got three hits for the Jumbo Shrimp.

Norwood, now hitting .247, said he went to the plate looking for a fastball, and the BayBears' third pitcher, Eric Karch, who had blanked the Jumbo Shrimp for three innings, delivered it on the first pitch. It was Norwood's fourth homer of the year.

"I just kind of went up there looking for a fastball to hit,'' Norwood said. "When you get a good swing on it, things happen.''

Manager Randy Ready said of the victory, "He [Norwood] was going to be aggressive and look for something he could drive. It was a big win for us.''

Ready noted the Jumbo Shrimp made several mistakes in the game, but added, "A win covers up a lot of things.''

He said they made "fundamental mistakes'' like getting picked off or running into an out at third from second on a grounder to the shortstop.

"Those guys know better than that,'' he said. "It got covered up instead of being exposed.''

Then there was a misplay in left field in the seventh when Jeremias Pineda got spun around trying to catch a deep drive and it went off his glove for an error that accounted for the only two Mobile runs.

"The wind is blowing that way,'' Ready said. "Pineda is an above-average outfielder. …
