Councillors Likely to Approve New Food Store

UP to 30 jobs in Gateshead could be created if a new branch of Aldi is given the go-ahead.

Councillors have been asked to approve a plan to convert the former Co-op store in Wrekenton into a new branch of the German discount chain.

A report to the planning committee reveals, if approved, the supermarket would create jobs for to up to 30 people, as well as short-term construction jobs.

The site sits on the corner of Old Durham Road, Springwell Road and the High Street.

The Co-op which had previously occupied the site closed its doors in

November, leaving the 30 staff who worked there out of work.

It's currently home to a councilowned car park, which provides spaces for shoppers accessing the rest of the high street.

This will be maintained after the conversion, though it is to be redesigned slightly, accommodating short and long-term parking spaces as well as a charging point for electric cars. The current building would be transformed, with a design similar to other Aldi stores in the area. …
