A MAN arrested in connection with a "suspicious" fire that destroyed a Whitley Bay church has been released from custody.

On Monday Northumbria Police said the investigation into the fire at Trinity United Reform Church on the Esplanade on Saturday night was due to continue.

The 56-year-old man, who was arrested on Sunday, has now been released by police pending further inquiries.

Neighbours and families were evacuated from nearby buildings while 40 firefighters tried to bring the flames under control shortly after 8pm on Saturday.

A refuge centre for evacuated people was set up on Oxford Street and police and fire crews cordoned off Esplanade.

Emergency services remained at the scene on Sunday.

Drone footage of the fire captured by Katy Mai Chow showed flames and smoke rising above the town's skyline.

In the sped-up aerial footage, firefighters can be seen directing their jets onto the fire with the blue flashing lights of emergency services lighting up Esplanade. …
