I VISITED the Queensland school girls competition at the State Netball Centre, 10 years on from when I first represented Darling Downs.

It was great visiting the girls and sharing in their excitement.

It also gave me a healthy dose of perspective at a vital time.

The Firebirds have had a couple of tough losses and you can tend to get very big picture with your thinking.

I'm very critical of myself and my own performances -- it's my career and my job - but to go back there and remember where you came from and see how excited everyone is reminds you what netball is all about.

Uniforms were worn with pride and there wasn't a pleat out of place.

Every game was treated like the Suncorp Super Netball final.

There were no concerns about sponsorship, broadcasting or ticket sales.

Some of the coaches' speeches could have given Denzel Washington's character in Remember the Titans a run for his money. …
