Stanton Repeats as Area's Top Student Newspaper; Times-Union Presents Annual Awards to High School Newspapers, Journalists

Article excerpt

Stanton College Preparatory School's Devil's Advocate has won the Henry A. Blumenthal Memorial Award for the second straight year as the best overall student newspaper in the Times-Union's annual High School Journalism Awards contest. The award is named after a Times-Union copy editor who was known for his dedication to style and accuracy.

For more than 40 years, The Times-Union has supported the work of young journalists by presenting their newspapers and individual staff members awards of recognition for work completed during the school year.

The contest is open to all schools in the area that produce two to three printed issues in a school year.

There were 224 entries, in 10 individual categories, from staff members of the participating schools. This year's schools included Baldwin Middle Senior High School, Bishop Kenny High School, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology, Mandarin High School, and Stanton College Preparatory School.

All entries were judged by Times-Union staff members. Editor Mary Kelli Palka presented the awards Thursday in the Riverside Auditorium at the Times-Union Media building.

Third place in the Best Overall newspaper category was awarded to The Mandarin Times of Mandarin High School with a check for $150. Doni Parkinson is the faculty adviser.

The Artisan of Douglas Anderson School of the Arts placed second with a plaque and check for $250. Elizabeth Flaisig is the faculty adviser.

Indian Trails produced by Baldwin Middle Senior High School received the Campus and Community Award and a check for $350. The faculty adviser is Debbie Ashley.

Palka and Sue Ann Blumenthal, Henry's widow, presented the Devil's Advocate staff and adviser Larry Knight with the first place Henry A. Blumenthal Award plaque, the rotating trophy and a check for $550.
