AS a keen Newcastle United fan as well as a chess player, I am delighted with last Sunday's results and Newcastle winning the Championship, as are many of the our chess club members.

A lot of this success has been credited to Rafa Benitez and his meticulous planning and leadership. Many people will be able to describe at length his considerable successes as a manager at several clubs in different countries.

But how many people know that he is a very accomplished chess player as well? It's stretching a point but there are some common factors: careful planning, looking after your players, getting them into the right places at the right time, sustaining concentration, identifying the right time to attack or focus on defence, employing the right tactics against different opponents, sustaining the correct strategies for the skills you have available, recovering from bad losses and enjoying good victories. I could go on but you get the point...that he is a thinking manager. And a brilliant one.

Like the Championship, the Northumbria League programme has finished and the results are as follows.

Division 1: Champions - Forest Hall Admirals; Runners-up - Gosforth Empire Division 2: Champions - Forest Hall Brigadeers; Runners-up - Gosforth Salters Division 3: Champions - Tynedale Reivers; Runners-up - Tynemouth C Well done to all of the teams, winners and losers. The full programme has been completed with very few problems and with a lot of exciting games and a consistently high level of sportsmanship.

Although the league season is now over it does not mean that the clubs close down for the summer. Far from it. The cup season starts and the first-round draw has been made. This is very different from cup football because the teams get handicaps depending on the strength of their players so is possible that a home team can lose the match 0. …
