A three-bedroom villa, set in lush countryside between the Madonie mountains and the Med, and named after the wildflowers that grow all around, it's part of the portfolio for The Thinking Traveller, a family-run operator with a string of high-end villas in Sicily, Puglia and Greece.

Il Cappero is a throwback to a gentler age a simple, single-storey building, all wood floors, exposed beams and woven rattan panels on the ceilings. On arrival, we found the first of many bowls of fresh grapefruit, figs and lemons that owner Luigi had handpicked from the surrounding trees and would deliver to us each day.

A chic glass-fronted conservatory leads onto a shaded patio, beyond which is the private saltwater pool. The garden with sweeping views of the mountains is full of olive trees and Mediterranean plants, which melt into the olive groves beyond. …
