THE North Eastern Athletics Championships delivered no fewer than 50 medals for athletes of Teesside clubs, with 21 of them gold.

Leading the way on day one on the track in blue ribband senior men's 100 metres was Sam Griffin.

Running into a strong headwind Griffin (Middlesbrough AC) took the gold in a season's best time of 10.95 seconds, while bronze went to clubmate Alex Neeve in 11.51.

Griffin then returned on the Sunday to contest the 200 metres. Following the qualifying rounds he and Billingham man Christian Carson (Newham and Essex Beagles) were the two fastest qualifiers but it was Griffin who would add a second gold medal to his collection. Running into a strong headwind Griffin took the title in 22.07 with Carson taking silver in 22.62.

In the under 17 women's 80 metre hurdles Amy Carter (New Marske Harriers) retained her title in style in 11.98 before taking silver in the 200 metres in a personal best of 25.5.

It was in the middle distance events that Middlesbrough AC had most success on the track on day one. In the under 20 men's 1500 metres Josh Allen continued his rich vein of recent form unleashing a devastating finish to win the gold in 4:09.40.

Training partner Josh Cowperthwaite employed similar tactics in the under 17 men's race to take gold in 4:07.01.

The final gold medal of the first day came in the senior women's 800 metres with Emma Wortley winning in 2:17.78. Archie Lowe waited until the Sunday to win his gold winning the under 15 boys 3000 metres in 9:7.17. Greg Jayasuria (Middlesbrough and Cleveland Harriers) was a gold medal winner in a quality senior men's 5000 metres in a time of 14:54.95. The day before Greg ran well to take second in 3:59.84 in the 1500 metres. Jordan Thrower (New Marske Harriers) took a welldeserved silver in the under 17 women's 80 metre hurdles in 12. …
