Gibson Shows He Is Our Local Statesman

Article excerpt

I AM delighted Steve Gibson has come out for Stockton South's James Wharton in the General Election campaign (The Gazette 15.05.17).

By so doing, Steve, a former Labour councillor, is valiantly putting the interests of the UK and our local area before party politics.

If Theresa May is to have any chance of obtaining a good deal out of Brexit, she must have guaranteed support on the home front, in the shape of a substantial majority in the Commons. With anything less, the EU leaders will play fast and loose in the negotiations, to our detriment.

When it comes to Europe, Jeremy Corbyn fails to inspire confidence, and even if, unexpectedly, he won on June 8, it would be by the slimmest majority.

Whatever voters think of other Tory policies, the overarching issue is Brexit. Get Brexit on the right track and argue about the rest later!

Also, from a local perspective, it must be good for the Tees Valley to have an experienced and enthusiastic insider at Westminster. With everything else that's going on politically, it's essential we have a strong and effective voice in national government circles.

STEVE KAY Redcar & Cleveland Councillor Gibson takes our future seriously IT should come as no real surprise to most Teessiders that ex-Middlesbrough Labour Councillor and Boro Football Club Chairman Steve Gibson has come down firmly on the side of Conservative 'hopeful' James Wharton. (Gazette May 15 - Ex-Labour Gibbo backs Tory Wharton). Mr Wharton was the only Teesside MP to give his support to Breixt who was - and still is - the 'people's' overwhelming choice throughout the North of England.

Steve Gibson is a down-toearth pragmatic and successful businessman who takes the economic future of the North-east seriously.

KEN WALKER Middlesbrough Forget politics and stick to the day job THANKFULLY we live in a democratic society so Boro chair-man Steve Gibson OBE can vote for whoever he wants at the General Election on June 8. What is surprising though is his candid public support for a Conservative candidate in Stockton South MP James Wharton (Ex Labour Gibbo backs Tory Wharton,Gazette 15-5-17). …
