Toffees to Offer PS15m for Pickford? Everton Set to Bid PS15m for Pickford?

EVERTON are expected to start the bidding for Jordan Pickford at PS15million, but Sunderland will be looking for something closer to a world record fee.

Incredibly in an era of hyper-inflation in football's transfer market, the record fee for a goalkeeper has not changed for 16 years. Juventus paid Parma PS33m for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001. With Pickford's reputation having grown massively this season, rich clubs interested in him and a contract until 2020, the Black Cats will hold out for an amount closer to that as they look to cash in on their prize asset.

The Black Cats will have to adjust to life outside of the Premier League while building a team to get back into it. They are set to lose 12 players from this season's first team squad for nothing. Although they will finish bottom of the 2016-17 Premier League, such is the staggering size of its television deal they will earn more than PS100m, whereas Football League champions Newcastle United earned around PS7.5m in prize money. Even with parachute payments to soften the blow, it is still a huge gap.

Last summer, when the chasm was Turn to Page 53 FROM BACK PAGE not quite so huge, Newcastle raised funds by selling Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum for a combined PS55m. Pickford is only asset Sunderland have in that kind of league.

Newcastle made a transfer profit last summer and saw gates increase in the Championship but still expect to post a loss for the financial year. With debts of PS110.4m, Sunderland may not feel they can do that.

Pickford was part of the England Under-21 squad which won last summer's Toulon Tournament and has been hugely impressive in his first full Premier League season. He started it as the Black Cats' second-choice goalkeeper but a freak training ground injury to Vito Mannone gave him his chance and he has gone on to be one of the league's star performers. …
