FOR those of us lucky enough to live here, no accent is more distinctive than the Geordie twang.

But what do the rest of the country think? The UK is famous for its vast array of accents, with a total of 56 recognised across the British Isles.

From Birmingham to Edinburgh, every city has its own recognisable lilt.

Now people can test whether they know their Cockney from their Estuary with this interactive Accent Map of the British Isles quiz from Expedia.

According to results of the quiz from last year, which had 1.3 million guesses, the Glaswegian accent proved to be the most recognisable with 77% of participants getting the correct answer. But Newcastle fared less well, coming eighth out of 15.

Received pronunciation (74%), Northern Irish (70%) and Southern Irish (70%) rounded off the top four.

On the other end of the scale Birmingham proved to be the least recognisable, with just 31% of users able to correctly identify the Brummie accent. …
