WHAT a great race we have on paper in the Carters Canine Capers final over 407 metres at the Grafton Greyhound Racing Club tonight.

Four heats were contested last week and a brilliant field of chasers has made its way through to what will prove to be a great form race for weeks to come.

This race is quite intriguing with some cagey old customers engaged as well as some extra-smart youngsters which are on the way up.

The fastest qualifier is the Charlie Northfield trained Pants On Fire which is one of those youngsters on the way and, while there is no doubting his ability, he will have to overcome some significant hurdles if he is to take out the major end of the spoils.

Pants On Fire jumped from box 5 in his heat and as expected he was slowly away and did switch to the outside almost instantly. However, to his good fortune the runners which were boxed outside of him all showed good speed and essentially got out of his road in the early stages.

Once receiving clear galloping room, Pants On Fire raced wide throughout and came with a withering run out wide to swamp the leaders and run what was a smart 23.25 seconds given the amount of start. He did spot the leaders but he did receive a clear run.

From box 1 in the final tonight he is going to find it much more difficult to get to the outside where he wants to be and he does look to have his work cut out for him tonight.

The trick is to find the greyhound which can take advantage of his potential impeded run and that is where it gets tough.

Ima Necromancer in box 4 could well hold the key to the race. He is a good beginner with good early speed, however he was a shade disappointing last week when leading comfortably before being run down by Pants On Fire. The time in the heat for Ima Necromancer was 23.39 seconds but it is worth noting that just three runs ago he did clock 23.17 seconds in finishing second to the extra smart Two Jay.

If he begins as well as he can, then he will also play his role in the chances of the two runners drawn on his immediate outside in Orara Shell in box 5 and Amber Ale in box 6. …
