Dutton Aims to Get Rid of 'Illegals'; GetUp Hits out at 'Impossible New Low'

IMMIGRATION Minister Peter Dutton has set a deadline of October 1 for "illegal maritime arrivals" who arrived in Australia during the Rudd and Gillard Labor governments to prove they are genuine refugees and owed protection.

Mr Dutton told reporters in Brisbane yesterday that 7500 IMAs had failed or refused to present their case for asylum.

Dubbing them "fake refugees", Mr Dutton said: "We aren't going to tolerate that any longer."

Many had arrived without identity documents on boats run by people-smugglers and were residing in Australia on government benefits - at a cost of about $250 million in income support alone last year, he said.

"If people think they can rip the Australian taxpayer off, if people think that they can con the Australian taxpayer, then I'm sorry, the game's up and we won't allow people to take Australian taxpayers for a ride," Mr Dutton said.

Any IMA who had not lodged an application to have their claim for asylum assessed by October 1 would be deemed to have forfeited any claim to protection. …
