Ex-Lions Star Has First Run with Panthers

AUSTRALIAN RULES: Ex-Brisbane Lions stalwart Daniel Merrett made an immediate impact in his first game for Caloundra but is expected to become a more prevalent force in the south-east Queensland competition in weeks to come.

The 32-year-old bagged three goals and snared seven marks at centre half forward during the Panthers' crushing 13.16 (94) to 5.5 (35) victory over University of Queensland at Carter Park.

It was his first serious outing since retiring from the big stage about eight months ago, following a 200-game career.

Coach Steve Moody said the club's star mid-season signing "did well" but would be better in future games.

"I suppose everyone thinks it would be pretty straightforward for a guy of his capacity to come in and dominate from day one (but) I don't think it was ever going to be as easy as that," he said.

"He's got to get used to the way we play... and vice versa but he's going to be a very good player for us.

"He's a big man (196cm, 103kg) and as he finds his feet I think he'll be not just a key player, he'll be a dominant player in our competition. …
