MATT Ritchie has been voted Newcastle United's player of the season after more than 2,500 people cast their vote in the Chronicle's Big Toon Survey.

The Scottish international netted 16 goals in all competitions and created a further 10, as United went on to lift the Championship title - and his performances have not gone unnoticed.

The 27-year-old, who moved from Bournemouth last summer, received 61 per cent of the vote or 1,767 votes out of 2,896 cast. His form at the turn of the year set the foundations for United's final promotion to the Premier League. Key performances against promotion rivals Brighton and Huddersfield Town stood out, while goals against Burton and Wigan earned the Magpies valuable three points in otherwise poor games.

Ciaran Clark came second with 16 per cent of the vote. Despite initial questions over his move to Tyneside, the 27-year-old proved the doubters wrong and become the cornerstone of Benitez's side, making 34 appearances and scoring two goals. …
