THE Frankel Factor can prove pivotal in the Investec Derby at Epsom tomorrow, with one of his first crop of offspring, Eminent, fancied to win the 238th running of the race.

Frankel carried all before him during his outstanding career and was acclaimed as the greatest thoroughbred to have graced the turf when he was retired at the end of the 2012 season, having won all 14 of his races.

He did not run in the Derby but many of his early progeny are showing abundant stamina and Eminent, who bears a resemblance to his famous father and is a general 7-1 chance for the Classic (4.30), seems likely to thrive moving up in distance.

Martyn Meade, his trainer, is also chairman of Mayfair-based investment company Hadleigh Partners and, at the age of 69, will be realising a lifetime ambition by having a runner in the race, which boasts record prize money of PS1,625,000 and forms part of the QIPCO British Champions Series.

It is likely to attract 100,000 racegoers and Her Majesty the Queen will present the winning trophies.

"Just to have a runner in the Derby is fantastic," Meade said. "To be part of it is a privilege and beyond my wildest dreams. All that background and history, all those wonderful winners over the years and how they've all gone on to make wonderful stallions. All the pageantry and support for it. There cannot be anything better.

"I look at the American races and the high-value contests around the world but they mean nothing like the Derby. I have to pinch myself because there's no standout horse in the race this year and the more you look at it, the more it looks like he has a good chance."

Eminent made a good impression when winning his only start as a twoyear-old, over a mile at Newmarket in the autumn, and returned to Headquarters in April to win the Craven Stakes in a record time. …
