Duo to Do Battle in Blaydon Race; ATHLETICS

THERE is an international feel about tonight's J&J Stanley-supported Blaydon Race, Rio Olympians Alyson Dixon and Sonia Samuels locking horns again.

The British team-mates in Brazil in the marathon face each other for the first time since on the streets of Tyneside.

Sunderland Stroller Dixon has been a familiar figure in the Blaydon over the years, having lined up previously on six occasions.

Tonight she goes for a hat-trick of wins, having come out on top last year and the year before.

For former Wallsend Harrier Samuels it will be her first venture in joining 4,600 other hopefuls running, jogging and walking along Scotswood Road.

Both athletes have shown good form recently. Dixon, in the throes of World Championship training, out-sprinted Paula Radcliffe to win the Sunderland City Half-Marathon.

Samuels showed good speed to finish runner-up behind Jo Pavey in last week's London 10k in a pbequalling time of 33min 18secs. In the head-to-head in last year's Olympic Games, Dixon finished in 28th place in 2:34:11 with Samuels crossing the line two places adrift in 2:34:36. …
