SUFFOLK clinched a 10-wicket win on the first ball of their second innings after Northumberland staved off an innings defeat.

A battling rearguard effort ultimately proved to be in vain, capping off a frustrating match for the hosts.

Bowled out for just 152 in their first innings replying to Suffolk's 424-4, Northumberland made 272 in their second innings.

That levelled the scores but Martyn Cull dispatching the first ball of the Suffolk's second innings to the boundary to win with more than two sessions remaining.

Matt Whaley's second Minor Counties century was a rare bright spot for the vanquished hosts.

Whaley, who finished the previous day on 92 not out, reached 113 but his drive off Suffolk spinner Ben Reece was caught at cover for the ninth wicket.

Northumberland began the final day 45 runs from making Suffolk bat again after the visitors had bossed the first two days.

Whaley's stubborn resistance only delayed the inevitable as his ninth-wicket stand with Ollie McGee produced 81 runs. …
