DARRYL Flahavan's professionalism and thoughtful technical approach to goalkeeping will make him a major asset to Middlesbrough, according to former Boro and Darlington keeper Andy Collett.

An experienced shot-stopper and coach who played with new Boro boss Garry Monk at Southampton and worked under him at Leeds, Flahavan was announced as one of five recruits to a new-look Boro coaching staff this week.

And Collett believes the 38-year-old's arrival spells good news for the club and its goalkeepers Connor Ripley and Dimi Konstantopoulos, who will compete for the No 1 spot.

Collett trained Flahavan for a three-month spell at Oldham when the latter joined the Latics on loan, and said he was one of the brightest stoppers he has ever worked with.

"Darryl was very hard-working when he came to Oldham and I'm pleased to see him now at Boro," Collett said.

"I think he was 33 at the time when he came to Oldham but he was still looking to improve and amend his technique, and he was open to new ideas, and at that age that was unusual.

"I've worked with many professional goalkeepers and he was one of the most intelligent.

"He looked after himself physically, ate right and took time stretching before and after sessions which is why he prolonged his career despite a couple of serious injuries."

Flahavan went into coaching after leaving Crawley in February 2016, and veteran former England goalkeeper Rob Green praised the way he operated on the training ground while at Leeds.

Now frst-team goalkeeping coach at Gateshead, Collett believes Flahavan's "modern and thoughtful" outlook means he can he make a similar positive impression at Rockliffe Park when it comes to helping improve Boro's keepers.

"Modern goalkeeping coaches are into technique and seeing faults and correcting them," Collett said. …
