Boost for Ben the Baker; Hackathon to Build New Assistive Tech

BEN Hunter's life completely changed when he first picked up a whisk six months ago and set his sights on being a baker.

Now the 21-year-old Toowoomba resident, who has Down syndrome, will be a participant in the Queensland Government's ground-breaking Assistive Devices Hackathon competition in August.

A team of specialists, engineers and fabricators will work with Mr Hunter, who has limited verbal skills, to develop new technology to take his business Ben and Co: Bakers with Purpose to the next level.

His support carer Andre Greenhalgh said Mr Hunter came out of his shell after learning how to bake and prepare food.

"We hope to progress Ben's baking because he does cooking for markets and we want to take that to next step and go into catering with functions," he said.

"He's been baking since late last year (and) he absolutely loves it - he loves everything, even the customers, but also doing the icing as well. …
