THE Maccabees goodbye tour arrived in Newcastle on Saturday night - but it was more of a farewell flourish than a sad sign off.

The band have decided to call it a day on their own terms, saying there's been no falling out but that they want to take a break after more than a decade touring and performing. And you can see that they remain tight in the course of a 90-minute show that rattles along with a verve and energy that owes plenty to a crowd here to enjoy a high-tempo greatest hits set.

There are four soaring albums' worth of material to choose from and it is performed with a confidence and energy that makes you wonder whether this really will be the last time they play Newcastle, a city they note - with a smile - has "a lovely bridge" that they love coming over.

That the North East is one of the stops on this pretty short farewell suggests their love for the city is genuine - and there's a moment of melancholy when they say depart before the encore. …
