SCOTT Parker is the man that Newcastle United fans used to jokingly claim picked up the club's last European trophy.

Before a game against AZ Alkmaar Parker had a bemused expression as he was forced to pose for a picture with a UEFA plaque that read: "Winner - Intertoto Cup 2006".

Back in the 2006/07, it was Parker who guided the Magpies to the Intertoto Cup by virtue of being the team that stayed in the old UEFA Cup the longest.

It was the club's European exit that ultimately cost Glenn Roeder his job later that season.

Newcastle played Ventspils, Levadia Tallinn, Fenerbahce, Frankfurt, Palermo and Celta Vigo in the play-off and group stages of the UEFA Cup. United remained unbeaten to set up a game in Belgium against Zulte Waregem before a clash with AZ Alkmaar in the last 16.

At one stage United were 4-1 up in the tie but ended up being dumped out on away goals after the Dutch side pulled a goal back then won the second leg 2-0. …
