Classic win

NEW Zealand surfer Ricardo Christie won the 42nd annual Ben King Memorial Classic in Byron Bay.

Christie competed on the professional tour at one point and win home with $5000 while Lennox Head surfer Zac Wightman fared the best of the locals finishing fourth.

The open women's division was won by Lennox Head teenager Nyxie Ryan who will be one of the favourites at the Skullcandy Oz Grom Open this week.

In a big month of surfing, Byron Bay resident Matt Wilkinson had his best performance of the World Surf League season winning the Fiji Pro.

Mead team

MARIST Brothers rugby league junior David Mead was named in the Gold Coast Titans team of the decade in the NRL.

Mead played 147 games for the Titans between 2009-2016 and holds numerous club records.

He has scored the most tries with 67 and joint highest try-scorer in a season when he crossed the line 16 times in 2013.

Premiership-winning Grafton Ghosts fullback Anthony Don was named on the bench and is one of only two players still at the club to be recognised in the top team. …
