Matilda Has Write Story Stuff; Inspired by Kitten Rescue

CONGRATULATIONS to Matilda Pereira, our 'Young Writer Award' recipient for June, who won with her heart warming story about her grandmother's rescue of a lost kitten.

Matilda, a grade four student at Gladstone South State School received her trophy and gift voucher yesterday but she has not yet decided how to spend the money. She knows what she is passionate about though.

"I love writing because when I write all my worries go away and my mind gets filled with ideas," she said.

In her winning story Matilda recounts how her grandmother noticed a tiny kitten lying on the ground in a terrible state.

Matilda describes with clarity the state of the kitten:

"He was barely moving, he had prickles all over, itchy fleas were everywhere and he didn't even meow" Matilda writes.

Her grandmother took the kitten to the vet where she was advised that the kitten was only one week old and would need lots of attention if he were to survive. …
