THE sponsors of the Blaydon Race certainly got into the spirit of things on race night, with 16 staff and family setting foot along Scotswood Road, together with over 4,000 other competitors.

Blaydon-based waste disposal company, J&J Stanley, who came on board to support the region's second biggest running event after the Great North Run, even had the company's owner Gordon Stanley among the starters.

And he wasn't disgraced as he crossed the finish line close to his business on the outskirts of the town.

"I wanted to finish inside the hour and I did that with nearly five minutes to spare,'' said a delighted Gordon, whose company will be behind the race for a second time next year.

"When it was announced that we would be backing the Blaydon everyone was keen to be part of it, and I was delighted that we had 16 members of staff and family taking part.

"They all thoroughly enjoyed themselves, with Barry Ord being our quickest representative, finishing in just over 41 minutes. …
