BORO'S search for a right-back has reached its conclusion with the addition of Cyrus Christie from Derby County.

The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international jetted back from Derby's pre-season training camp on Friday in Tenerife and headed for Rockliffe for his medical.

We caught up with Steve Nicholson of the Derby Telegraph to find out more.

What do you recall about Christie's early days at Derby? "Christie was very much in demand when Derby signed him from Coventry and a few clubs were in for him at the time.

"You could see straight away that he was a bright young player. They signed him the season after they'd lost in the play-off final, in which Andre Wisdom, who was on loan at the time, had played rightback.

"Ironically enough, Wisdom has re-signed this summer and it's his signing that's probably pushed Christie through the exit door.

"But in that first season he came in and quickly established himself in the team. I recall him starting the season very well, a game that sticks in my mind was Carlisle in a League Cup tie when he was absolutely excellent."

What kind of player is he? "He's got a lot of pace and power in his locker and he likes to get forward at every opportunity. "I think he'd make a good wingback. He once told me he'd started out in the game as a winger, which comes as no surprise when you watch him play.

"He really does bomb forward whenever he gets the chance, he's got a good engine and good pace. His decision making in the final third could be better at times, but you often see that with attacking full-backs or wingers.

"Defensively, I think he needs to improve but there were signs that that was happening at the start of last season. He had an excellent start to last season and was in the best form of his Derby career.

"But he suffered an ankle injury at Wolves in November, which was a real shame because at the time he was playing very well. He was out of action for two-and-a-half months or so and when he came back he couldn't dislodge Chris Baird. …
