MARK Twain is supposed to have said, "To a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail."

Now just because it originated with him does not mean that it therefore has to be enshrined in the 'wisdom hall of fame'.

But much similar, "homespun philosophy" of people like him deserves to be taken aside, so to speak, and gnawed on for a while until it delivers up the flavour that is so often just under the surface.

Yet some may ask, who are 'people like him' anyway that their little witticisms should be given space in the record?

For an answer I have to resort to a little 'homespun philosophy' myself in that I have often found "the proof of the pudding is in the eating".

What I guess I'm hoping to convey here is that we ought to be on the alert for those gems that appear now and then, whoever says them, give them our attention, digest their value and let them enhance our often drab existence that we might otherwise have. …
