Maddi Carries on the Family Legacy; USQ Student Continues a Tradition That Spans Decades and Generations

ATTENDING USQ is a family tradition for Paramedicine student Maddi Polzin.

Her family connection to USQ goes back to 1968 when her grandfather, Ron Atkinson, was a lecturer at the Queensland Institute of Technology Darling Downs. For almost 40 years he taught biology, physiology and nursing at the Toowoomba-based campus before retiring in 2006.

During that time, Miss Polzin's father Daryl graduated with both a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and a Graduate Diploma in Municipal Engineering.

Then in 1991, her mother Wendy also crossed the graduation ceremony stage to receive her Diploma of Teaching (primary).

Twenty-six years on and Miss Polzin is now following in their footsteps while also forging her own path, studying Paramedicine at USQ Ipswich.

The 2017 USQ Future Community Leaders scholarship recipient said she was proud to become the third generation in her family to attend USQ.

"It wasn't until I started applying for scholarships at USQ that I realised just how influential my grandpa had been on the University," Miss Polzin said. …
