NEWCASTLE'S Grainger Market's glazed arcade is to undergo a repair and refurbishment project to bring it back to its former glory as part of a PS2.66m investment programme by the city council.

The council secured funding worth PS820,000 two years ago through its Capital Investment Fund to kick-start a major refurbishment - the Grade I building's largest investment programme in more than a decade.

The first phase led to an upgrade of all 14 of the market's entrances, with inner gates and outward-facing shutters, upgraded lights and improved signage.

Now the next chapter in the history of the market, established 180 years ago, is set to start, with work to repair and refurbish the arcade's glazed and barrelled roof.

Coun Ged Bell, Newcastle City Council's cabinet member for inclusive growth, said: "Grainger Market is one of the most iconic and historically relevant landmark buildings in the city, and for generations the market place has been at the centre of the community. …
