THIS hero risked his own life to save a pensioner from a burning house.

Paul Jarvis was driving along Hillheads Road in Whitley Bay when he noticed black smoke coming from the windows of a house.

As he neared the scene, he saw flames and immediately pulled over.

The 63-year-old rang 999 before kicking down the front door. He fought through thick smoke and intense heat to reach an 84-year-old man in the kitchen and carried him to safety.

Firefighters then arrived and took over. They put out the blaze and saved the pensioner's dog, which had also been inside the property.

Recalling the incident, Mr Jarvis, who used to work in the building trade but is now retired, said: "It was fate that I was there that day.

"I don't usually drive down that way but my daughter asked me to drop off a lawn mower at her house so I was on a different route.

"When I was on Hillheads Road I saw black smoke and, as I got nearer to the house, I could see flames through the glass door.

"I pulled up on the pavement and called the fire service, then I hung up the phone and kicked the front door.

"In the hallway, the side of the staircase was on fire and there was thick smoke.

"I tried to keep as low as I could. My chest was burning, my throat was hurting and my eyes were stinging - I could hardly see anything.

"But I went into the kitchen and saw a gentleman there. He was in shock and was panicking. I brought him out and put him on the grass outside.

"Then I went back inside to see if there was anyone else there. I heard someone shouting that there was no one else inside and I came back out."

The fire had started accidentally in the hallway when the pensioner tried to ignite some waste materials inside his property, to then take outside in an attempt to burn an old tree stump in his garden. …
