Cherries' Ace Gradel to Stay Down South

SUNDERLAND'S chances of signing Max Gradel have taken a blow, the winger seemingly set on staying at Bournemouth next season, writes CRAIG JOHNS.

Simon Grayson was keen on bringing the pacy winger to the Stadium of Light this summer, having previously managed him at Leeds United.

Injuries limited the 29-year-old to 11 appearances last season, with reports suggesting boss Eddie Howe was ready to offload him.

Howe, though, was impressed by Gradel's attitude in training and included him in the squad for the recent training camp in Marbella.

That tour concluded on Saturday with a friendly over Estoril.

Not only did the Cherries win but Ivory Coast international Gradel set up the first before scoring the second in a 2-0 victory.

Speaking after the game, Gradel (below) made clear his intention to stay at the Vitality Stadium.

He said: "For me the most important thing is fitness but it is always nice to set up a goal and score one. For me that is nice. …
