A SLOGAN for the Coast's light rail funding push has been unsheathed during Sunshine Coast Council's July meeting.

"It's rail or fail," Cr Rick Baberowski repeated while giving input yesterday into a presentation detailing how the transport levy would be spent.

His target was the state and federal governments in light of the extra 200,000 people expected to move to the Sunshine Coast.

"If we don't get a second transport system, that being rail, you are sitting in congestion," Cr Baberowski said.

The council upped the transport levy by $15 this year to create a future fund dedicated to the light rail project. It will generate about $2 million.

Cr Baberowski said the transport levy had been mostly dedicated to service upgrades in previous years.

"Now the wait is finally focused on the argument for additional infrastructure."

He referenced the Gold Coast's light rail system.

"(It's) perhaps one of the only things we will want to be compared to the Gold Coast on," he said. …
