Grayson's Experience Invaluable - O'Shea

JOHN O'Shea says new boss Simon Grayson's Championship experience will be invaluable as Sunderland bid for a rapid return to the Premier League.

The Black Cats' squad contains only half a dozen players who have played in the second tier, with skipper and former Manchester United man O'Shea one of more than 20 who have never played at that level.

Yet Grayson has told his players what to expect as they prepare for the new season which gets under way a fortnight today.

O'Shea said: "The new manager wants to build his team, his squad, that's going to be able to cope with the demands in the Championship and hopefully that will be able to challenge in the Championship too.

"When you face the disappointment of a relegation it is important you get everyone focused as quickly as possible on the main targets for this season.

"That is to bounce back as quickly as possible to get the club back up with the big boys in the Premier League.

"We know the Championship is so competitive and that's what the manager is trying to stress to us because he has had that experience there and he knows what you need to be successful in it. …
