SUNSEEKERS flocked to Newcastle International Airport on the busiest day of the year as the great summer gateway got underway.

The school holidays are now upon us, and almost a million North East holidaymakers are expected to pass through the airport's doors before the start of the new school year.

A third of tourists will have suitcases packed with suncream and beach towels for their breaks to the Canary Islands, the Balearics, and Spain.

Greece and Turkey also proved popular among Tyneside jetsetters hoping to catch some early summer rays.

Leon McQuaid, aviation development manager, believes the airport is set to enjoy a recordbreaking year for passenger turn "There's definitely been an increase year-on-year, in the next two or three days we are probably going to the have the highest number of passengers for the last decade.

"There is real positive atmosphere buzzing around the place, and we're really seeing a return to pre-recession levels.

"There's probably a lot of people who have never been here or haven't been in a while, so we want everyone to have a great experience and to come back here.
