POLICE cadets arrested a disaster when they stepped in to save a raidhit food bank.

Volunteers at the Newcastle West End Foodbank discovered it had been targeted by thieves who caused thousands of pounds of damage.

The foodbank, in Venerable Bede Church in Benwell Lane, has been hit three times in the past fortnight, with cash stolen but the food left untouched.

Police cadets joined Newcastle West Neighbourhood Policing Team to offer support to the foodbank in their time of need.

Three of the cadets joined PCSO Mark McDonald to clean up after the burglary, prepare food packages and hand them out to members of the public in the area.

Newcastle West Neighbourhood Inspector Alan Davison said: "There have been three burglaries at the foodbank in the past fortnight and it has had a massive effect on the local community.

"No food has been stolen but the burglaries have forced the foodbank to close which means they can't carry out the positive work that has been seen so widely in the press in recent months. …
