ALEKSANDAR Mitrovic has revealed his preference is to stay at Newcastle United this summer.

Earlier this year the club's chief scout Graham Carr, the man who signed Mitrovic, had suggested to the club that the striker was worth persevering with and he was worth another punt in the Premier League.

However, with Carr now gone, the striker has been the subject of interest from French Ligue 1 side Lyon and Turkish clubs Besiktas and Fenerbahce.

Lyon were told Mitrovic would cost them PS16million this week and, as Newcastle look to raise funds for another striker, suddenly the future of the Serbian international seems to be up in the air again.

However, the big striker has indicated he would still like to stay with the Magpies next season and told the Chronicle from Newcastle's training base at Carton House: "I am happy here.

"We will see what has happened by the end of the transfer window but at the moment I am here and I will do everything to work hard like I always do."

Mitrovic remains a massively popular figure with the supporters on Tyneside and also had a message for them amid speculation he could be sold.

When asked if hearing his name chanted by fans still meant something to him, he added: "I am very glad they do.

"What I would say is I don't know what is going to happen at the end.

"While I am here I will give everything like I always have.

"Sometimes that is enough, sometimes it is not.

"I hope the fans stay with us and we need them now back in the Premier League."

Mitrovic, though, knows he needs an injury-free season this time around - especially with Serbia potentially heading to the World Cup finals in Russia. …
