Farming Group Hits out at Kielder Forest Lynx

A FARMING group has spoken out against plans to introduce lynx into Northumberland's Kielder Forest.

Earlier this week, the Lynx UK Trust submitted an application to Natural England to bring six of the wild cats, pictured, from Sweden to Northumberland with the aim of establishing a colony of the animals in the forest.

The trust says the re-introduction of lynx could bring massive economic benefits to the area, with Kielder becoming known as "the kingdom of the lynx" and attracting thousands more tourists.

But the proposals are dividing local residents, and the National Sheep Association - which represents the views and interests of sheep producers throughout the UK - has raised a number of concerns over the plans.

NSA chief executive Phil Stocker said: "NSA has been strongly opposed to what Lynx UK Trust is calling a pilot release since its inception, with serious concerns around the way the organisation conducted its consultation process to questions around whether current law would even allow such a release to take place.

"Clearly NSA is opposed to lynx because of the predatory threat the species pose to sheep, but our argument is far more wide-reaching than that. …
