HAVE you got what it takes to triumph as our young charity champion of the year? Harriotte Lane certainly did last year, raising PS35,000 over a three-year period, organising and staging her own events from bag packing and sponsored runs to abseiling and zip wire feats.

Having the title of Miss Junior Teen Great Britain in 2016, Harriotte also volunteers with several children's charities including local autistic group The Kayaks, for which she is a young ambassador.

She attends the group, volunteers as a helper on trips and is a friend to many of the disabled children, offering them support, encouragement and help.

The teenager has faced adversity herself - bullying both at school and online, and dealing with life-affecting burns injuries - but she has fought back and gained confidence to be an inspiration to others.

Harriotte won the Young Charity Champion of the Year trophy, sponsored by Blueline Taxis, at last year's North East Charity Awards, our annual event to recognise the hard work and innovative thinking by our local charities and individual fundraisers, and this year's judges are on the hunt for someone just as deserving for the 2017 award.

The category, open to those aged 21 and under, celebrates the kindness of young people who have shown the greatest commitment and achievement for their chosen charity, social enterprise, not-for-profit or campaigning group.
