Hefty Raise Given to Gators' Defensive Coordinator

Defense has been the strong suit for the Florida football team under coach Jim McElwain and one of the key architects of that side of the ball received a substantial raise as UF announced modifications to the contracts of three assistant coaches on Friday.

Randy Shannon, McElwain's linebackers coach the last two seasons and promoted to defensive coordinator in January, will receive a $400,000 raise for next season according to the terms of a contract released by the university.

Shannon, also the UF recruiting coordinator, will get $225,000 in retention bonuses over the next two years if he stays with the Gators, a $10,000 supplement from Nike and a $1,500 academic incentive bonus.

Florida's recent recruiting successes likely had a lot to do with Shannon's bump of more than 80 percent in salary. The Gators have received recent commitments from players such as quarterback Matt Corral of California and wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase of Louisiana, putting their prospective 2018 signing day class in the top-10 in the nation. …
