THE top-of-the-table clash lived up to its billing as leaders Bomarsund dramatically beat Whitley Bay by one run.

Stephen Thain top-scored with 58 as Jack Jeffrey (3-22), Chris Wrigley (3-35) and Neil Dolan (3-4) combined to bowl out Bomarsund for 152.

In reply, Craig Sample shared in a 50-run opening stand before Matthew Crawford took four wickets as Bomar fought back.

Sample went on to complete his half-century but was then bowled shortly afterwards by Adam Gardiner, leaving the visitors on 106-6. The tail pushed the score on to 151-9, Wrigley finishing 20 not out.

However, they fell a run short when tailender Dolan edged the ball to Gary Bell at first slip to give Crawford his fifth wicket.

It was a first five-wicket haul for Crawford, who finished with 5-39, while Gardiner claimed 3-43.

Bomar opened up a 16-point lead at the top while Bay slipped to fourth.

Backworth Seconds moved into second place, beating Ulgham by 71 runs. …
